Anne Rice Calls 'Twilight Saga' A 'Failure Of The Imagination'

Oh snap! The grand dame of vampire literature, Anne Rice, had some not-so-nice things to say about Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight Saga" universe in a recent interview with New Jersey's The Star-Ledger while promoting her new novel "Of Love and Evil." We're wondering if this will spark a verbal smack-down in the bloodsucking book world!

"['Twilight']’s based on a really silly premise: that immortals would go to high school. It's a failure of imagination, but at the same time, that silly premise has provided Stephenie Meyer with huge success," Anne said. "The idea that if you are immortal you would go to high school instead of Katmandu or Paris or Venice, it’s the vampire dumbed down for kids. But it's worked. It's successful. It makes kids really happy."

It's not too surprising that Anne had less-than-sweet nothings to whisper about the series that has made vampires the hottest supernatural property around and virtually diluted a genre that had been a sophisticated cultural metaphor. Still, wow, those are some pretty harsh words towards Stephenie! Anne did add that "it's almost like a stroke of genius to put vampires in high school," but that still sounds a bit derogatory to us.

When speaking about how she always viewed the vampire, Anne said, "I always thought of the vampire as being a metaphor for the outsider in each of us, the criminal, the predator. I was writing about a mythical being that represented our own dark sides." She added, "Part of the mystery of being a human being is that mixture of the spiritual and the animalian. We have the capacity to murder, but also the capacity to love and respond and be tender to those in need."

Anne was sure to emphasize that, despite the range of vampires presented in pop culture since she released "Interview With the Vampire" in 1976—from "The Twilight Saga" to "True Blood" and "The Vampire Diaries"—they are still fictional characters. "They’re fantasy characters, and we have to keep reminding ourselves of this. They don’t exist," she said. "I get e-mails from people who are outraged that I watch 'True Blood.' They say, 'How can you condone the evil of "True Blood."' I say, 'Are you kidding? Vampires aren’t real. Keep that in mind.'"

oh my gosh....yes we know that vampires arent real ,thanks for the reminder that the creatures we love and some people aspire to be,dont exist and they can never fullfill that fantasy, thanks for that anne. but what children(and hormonal teenage girls) choose to believe ,whether its your stories (anne) ,stephanies, tate halloways,or any other fiction writers...has nothing to do with your personal opinion of stephanie meyers(which i recall, no one asking for) or her stories. the high school setting helps us as her teen fan base relate to her story which is probably why her books were made into movies and yours werent!!!!!! so suck on those twilight apples anne!!!!!!
I want to say what ever! Stop being jealous of what Stephanie has accomplished just because you couldnt Anne Rice! And it is not for kids I am 35 and proud to be a huge Twilight fan. My sister is 31 and my Aunt is 58 years old and loves and is a member of Twifans! I to this day have trouble getting into certain books because they do not draw me into the book like Twilight Saga has.Stephanie you ROCK!
OMG!!!!!! this is RIDICULOUS surely Anne us damn jealous of stephenie's success I love twilight series n she can't just humiliate it it's better to tell her to keep her opinions to herself as nobody cares bout it
that's exactlly right ,she created a fictional world, a fantasy, just like J.R.R.TOLKIEN did in lord of the rings, and I don't hear anne criticising him. It's because she doesen't write about hobbits.
You can't really expect Anne Rice to say that Twilight is amazing, since it goes against the grain of the forklore she created for her own vampires.

Unlike Stephen King, she was a least a bit more respectful I guess you could say. She never said anything about Twilight being " bad" per-say, she basically just saying that the vampires in Twilight would never exist in her world that she created. And they probably wouldn't- her vampires are much more darker and sexualized.

I do agree with her on this though:
"They’re fantasy characters, and we have to keep reminding ourselves of this. They don’t exist," she said. "I get e-mails from people who are outraged that I watch 'True Blood.' They say, 'How can you condone the evil of "True Blood."' I say, 'Are you kidding? Vampires aren’t real. Keep that in mind.'"

SO MANY Twilight haters base their opinion on this point, and they forget that vampires are fictional, Stephenie Meyer can make her vampires do whatever she wants, she would never be wrong.

So all and all, Its disappointing that she doesnt like twilight, but I respect her opinion since she was the Queen of vampire forklore. Not that I agree with it lol.
Could be she's jealous of the Saga's world wide success and huge fan following???
The reason 'our' vampiresgo to school is to fit in with the community and not stand out as different. Alice and Edward in particular are too 'young' to stay home without causing suspicion. As 'Anne' said herself - these are fictional characters and fiction is whatever you want it to be. We LOVE our vampires because of the fantasy world they create for us to escape into.
Anne is so jealous and stupid!
And if she thinks that people actually believe in vampires then she is veryy stupid. Its called imagination Anne, ok get with the picture! :S
how is she gonna say that just because people like twilight and maybe her books to doesnt give her the right to bash on twilight she wouldnt like it if stephenie meyer said that bout her ugh shes just jeoulous because shepeople like stephenie better than her
