Chapter 1

I picked up my iPhone and began texting my best friend Anna. “Hi Anna,” I said. “Hi Jessie. Where have you been? I haven’t talked to you all weekend,” Anna said. “Yeah, I’m sorry about that. My mom made me finish unpacking my room this weekend. You should see our house; it’s so small! This whole town is small! Honestly Anna; we live three miles outside of town and the biggest store we have is Fred’s,” I said. “Jessie come and help me unpack,” said mom. “Uuggh!!! Anna I have to go my mom wants me,” I said. “Ok girl ttyl,” she said. “Bye Anna.” I sighed. I did not want to unpack. Unpacking meant that the moved was permanent. …..At least until my mom decided to move us again. My mom was a missionary; which meant we moved. ….A lot! I laid my phone down on my bed and started downstairs. I walked into the kitchen and my mom had boxes everywhere. “Mom why did we have to move here,” I said. “Because sweetheart, this is where God told me to go,” she said. “Mom, I don’t understand why you keep putting all your faith into this Jesus person when we don’t even know who or where he is.” And then there it was on the kitchen counter… her bible. “You still have that book. Don’t you ever get tired of it? You must have read four times already. Jessie it doesn’t matter how many times you read it. It’s God’s holy word. I’ve had this bible since I was six years old. This bible will help me on my quest for salvation,” said mom. “But I thought you already had salvation. Yes sweetheart I do; but you can’t just go out and do what you want do. You have to follow God’s word and repent from your sins,” she said. She handed me a box of plates and bowls and I started putting them in the cabinet. “Mom I’m going outside. Ok, don’t leave the yard,” she said. I walked out into the yard and sighed. “I hate it here; this yard is so small.” We had one acre of land with one tree. There were dandelions everywhere. Mom walked out into the yard and pointed at our only tree. “I think I’ll hang a swing in that tree for you and your sister. Mom, when does Olivia get back from camp,” I said. “Today sweetie I’m going to the airport to get her; do you want to come. Yeah sure, it will give me something to do,” I said. We arrived at the airport gate were Olivia was suppose to come out. I took one look at her poison ivy and started laughing. “Ha ha, I told you you were a tree hugger. I am not!” she said. “Are too. I loved teasing Olivia; it was so easy to make her mad. “I am not!” she said; starting to get red-faced. “Are too! Mom, please make her stop!” Olivia said. Then I started jumping up and down; and I continued teasing her. “You are a tree hugger! You are a tree hugger!” I sang. “Momma, PLEASE!” she said. “Jessie, please stop tormenting your sister,” mom said. “Fine, I’m sorry Olivia.” “It’s ok Jessie,” she said. When we arrived at home, Olivia and I went to our rooms and took a nap. The next day we went with mom to the school. “Come on girls,” she said. “Okay mom,” we said. We walked into the administration office and sat down. The lady walked in and sat down at her desk. “Hi, I’m Mrs. Parks,” she said. “Hi, I’m Amber and these are my daughters, Jessica and Olivia. Hi Mrs. Parks,” we said. “What can I do for you today, Ms. Amber,” said Mrs. Parks. “I would like to get my daughters enrolled. Ok then; do you have their transcripts,” said Mrs. Parks. “Yes they’re right here.” Ok Ms. Amber, just fill out this emergency information form and you’ll be done,” she said. Mrs. Parks turned around and starting typing stuff into her computer. “Jessica, here is your schedule,” she said. “It’s Jessie,” I said; rolling my eyes. “Jessie, behave,” said mom. “Yes ma’am,” I said. “Here is your schedule Olivia,” she said. “Come on girls,” Mrs. Parks. She led us down a hallway to a classroom. “Ok Olivia this is your class.” She walked her in and introduced her to the class. “Class this is Olivia Wells, she transferred here from Texas,” Mrs. Parks said. “Hi I’m Ms. Mayberry,” said the teacher as she walked up. Welcome to our fourth grade science class,” said Ms. Mayberry. Mrs. Parks walked back out into the hall. “Follow me Jessica and I will show you to your class,” said Mrs. Parks. I rolled my eyes. “Mrs. Parks I’m only Jessica when I’m in trouble; the rest of the time I am Jessie. Very well; here we are,” Mrs. Parks said stopping in front of a classroom. “Mrs. Parks, may I ask you a favor?” I said. “Sure you can.” she said. “Please don’t introduce me as Jessica. Sure.” she said.
