why cant edward read her mind?

why cant he read bella's mind- i know she's like "special" but im confused as to how that happens and does she turn into a vampire somewhere along the books? im only on book 1 sooo... i dunno.

Edward cannot read Bellas mind cuz she has a shield protecting her..thats also y Edward cannot read her mind...so all along Bella was meant 2 be a vampire just like fate(which she does in Breaking Dawn)
