It happened without warning. He killed Edward.
Chapter 1
Edward's POV
I was in our meadow. But it didn't feel complete because Bella wasn't here. She was at home with our daughter Renesmee. Nessie was a teenager now, even though she was just born a few years ago. She's in eighth grade right now. Bella stayed home to help her with her homework.
I jumped swiftly to my feet. I needed to go ahead and hunt so I could get home sooner. So I started running, following the trails of the many deer that passed through. Within minutes, I'd found one.
I crept silently toward the creature. It was grazing in a small clearing. Its ears were pricked up, listening intently. But it still didn't hear me. I pounced on it and killed it quickly. I fed, then left the carcass where it lay.
Then I got a strange feeling. Of course I wanted to go home to my wife and daughter, but something was drawing me further into the forest. I started to run again, following my instincts.
Before long, I caught the scent of another vampire. I could also smell the human blood he had drank. A low hiss escaped me to think of one this close to home.
Then I heard it. Low sobs comming from nearby. I slowed down and looked around. It was comming from my right. I walked slowly and came to another large meadow.
In the middle of the meadow, a man was kneeling on the ground. His head was in his hands as he sobbed. In front of him was a small body. A child! A growl sounded from in my chest.
But this man -- this vampire, rather -- looked like he was truly in agony. I couldn't help but want to talk to him. I walked toward him slowly and cautiously. He didn't look up until I was right in front of him.
" Excuse me, Sir? What's wrong?" I asked politely, looking from him to the child's body.
He looked up at me slowly. There was so much pain written across his face that it made me grimace. And I also noticed that I couldn't read his mind.....
Then his face changed. The sadness disappeared. A smile spread across his lips slowly. But this wasn't a happy smile. It was an insane smile that made my skin crawl. I took a step back.
He was on his feet and in my face in the blink of an eye. I could only stare, holding my ground.
" You don't know how long I've waited for this," he hissed.
I started to run away, knowing that this wouldn't be good, but he caught my arm. His grip was too hard for me to escape from.
" First, I'll deal with you. Then the rest of your family," he growled.
Then it was over. I could feel it. The fire burned me from the inside out. I didn't even have time to scream. All I saw was his black eyes. The insane smile was on his face again.
It all went black. I knew I was surely dead. I waited for the gates of Hell to open in front of me.
