They are doing a flashback scene showing when Edward left Carlisle for a short time not too long after he was changed thinking that if he hunted human monsters (rapists, killers etc.) that he could escape the guilt of hunting humans.  It was talked about in the first book but it was never mentioned in any of the movies.  Rob told Bill C. how that bothered him because this part of Edward's background which contributed so much to Edward's self loathing really influenced how Rob played him.  Bill thought this would be a great thing to put in before the wedding when Edward is making sure Bella knows everything about him before she says "I do".
