Prologue
As I stared into the eyes of the slayer, my partner passed out closed behind me, I couldn’t help but see my
recent life flashing before my eyes. I saw my first day at the Academy. I saw
the day Arista and I bonded. I saw my first lesson and I saw – what was most
likely – my last lesson.
I saw Matthew.
I saw my first love.
I saw my first date.
I saw my first kiss.
Matthew and I were about to die. I could see it. It was an incontrovertible fact. I could see it in the
bloodthirsty eyes of the slayer. I could see it in the way my hands were
shaking uncontrollably. I could see it in the blood pouring out of Matthew’s wounds.
If a miracle happened and I could defeat the slayer on my own, the blood loss
would definitely kill him first. I couldn’t even get close enough to heal his
wounds either.
I dropped to my knees in defeat. This was one situation I couldn’t get out of on my own, and my only back up was
thousands of miles away in a safe castle. It was all I could do not to just
break down and start crying.
