‘Breaking Dawn – Part 2′ nabs $30.4 million in midnight box office, beating ‘Part 1′ but not ‘Deathly Hallows’ and ‘Dark Knight Rises’

The highly-anticipated conclusion to The Twilight Saga opened in theaters last night, and domestically the film pulled in an impressive total at the midnight box office.

Breaking Dawn – Part 2 earned $30.4 million, besting Breaking Dawn – Part 1′s $30.2 million it made this week one year ago. It is a record for the five-film series.

Last night’s total was not enough to defeat the current record holder Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. The final film in the Potter series made an astounding $43.5 million at the midnight box office. The Dark Knight Rises, the third film in Christopher Nolan’s Batmantrilogy, continues to hold the number two spot with $30.6 million.

Breaking Dawn – Part 2 is projected to gross over $140 million domestically this weekend, and we’ll be sure to share the final total once it arrives.

The Twilight Saga midnight box office totals:
Twilight: $7 million
New Moon: $26.3 million
Eclipse: $30 million
Breaking Dawn – Part 1: $30.2 million
Breaking Dawn – Part 2: $30.4 million
