While filming is on lockdown and going strong, I thought it would be fun to review and discuss the things we are most anticipating about the Breaking Dawn films. We've shared the little things that they just have to include and the new characters we can't wait to meet. This time I'm focusing on the visuals and special effects. Breaking Dawn is a complicated (and some say convoluted) story. There are a number of images or visuals that when read, give you such amazing mental pictures it makes you wonder how will they ever replicate it onscreen? And while art is undeniably subjective, it still makes you wonder will the actual manifestion of something on film live up to the standards of the images I've created in my head.
That said, here are my top 5 Visual Images or Special Effects that I am anticipating in Breaking Dawn:
1. The Birth
I want blood, screaming, and bones breaking!
Don't get me wrong, I don't want horror movie gore (never been a fan). But I do want to see and feel the horror of the situation. I've read that a lot of this scene will be told through Bella's eyes. I'm okay with that as long as the images are clear and not some fuzzy, disjointed compilation of chaos. I want to see Jacob administer CPR and beg Bella to stay with him. I want to see Edward hold his daughter for the first time. I want to see Edward break Jacob's fingers as he pushes away his hand and plunges the syringe of venom into Bella's heart. But mostly I want to see their faces: Edward focused, "fierce and unthinking" and Jacob panicked and then full of despair "working over a corpse. Because that's all that was left of the girl we both loved. This broken, bled-out, mangled corpse."
2. The Wedding Dress
Trivial as it may seem, I am super excited to see Bella in all her bridal glory. The intricate hair braid, the sapphire hair combs, the line of pearl buttons down the back of her gown.
Plus this is one of those fiction meets real life moments: Kristen in a wedding gown and Tuxedo Rob--Let our imaginations run wild!! Gorgeous to the tenth power!!
MacKenzie Foy is a beautiful child who eerily resembles what one can only imagine a child of Rob & Kristen would look like. That said, I can't help scratch my head and wonder how the heck Renesmee is going to come together. I understand they are going to do some Benjamin Button (never saw it) type movie magic but I have to admit sometimes my stomach does a somersalt thinking about how potentially wrong this could all go. My only comfort is that Summit has tons of time and money to throw at this problem and I trust they are using a good portion of the budget and the year long wait to get the little vamp/human hybrid absolutely perfect.
4. The Cottage
Again, trivial I'm sure, but I want to see Edward & Bella's home. In my head I see a combination of Snow White meets The Secret Garden meets Little Bear. The quaintness, the nods to Isle Esme, the nursery-I expect it to be worthy of a cheesy "Home is where the (Still) Heart is" sampler. And of course the closet-so grande, so out of place, and so annoying to Bella.
5. Bella's shield
"The shield blew out from me in a bubble of sheer energy, a mushroom cloud of liquid steel."
Because the final confrontation is really a battle of the minds, I am excited to see how they bring it to life onscreen. The powers of Bella & Benjamin vs Jane & Alec could prove to be a visually very exciting mix with snow, wind, and earthquakes, oh my!
So that's my top 5 Visuals and Special Effects for Breaking Dawn. I'm sure there are lots that I missed so let me know what you hope lives up to your minds' eye.
*One Final Headscratcher: How are they going to translate so much wolf mindreading?
