When I did Breaking Dawn--Anticipation (Part 2) New characters, I purposefully left out Renesmee because I thought the "little nudger" deserved a category solely devoted to her. As I mentioned in the special effects post, I am still baffled at how they will create this one-of-a-kind child, but I feel confident Summit has the time, money, and desire to make it all work. They already scored huge points by finding, Mackenzie Foy, the most realistic looking mix of Rob & Kristen you could come up with without actually stealing their DNA. But for our purposes here I am focusing on Renesmee's relationships with 5 characters and how they will forever be changed by the little beauty.
1. Bella & Renesmee
"More than my own life" is the inscription on the locket Bella gives her daughter. Bella risks everything to bring Renesmee into the world and will do anything, even give her to Jacob, to keep her safe. But it is Renesmee who "saves" Bella during her transformation. "I held the blackness of nonexistence at bay by inches. It wasn't enough, though the determination....I couldn't pull even Edward's face into view....I felt myself slipping-there was nothing to hold on to...And then....My baby....Holding tight the warm memory of my daughter, I knew that I would be able to fight the darkness as long as I needed to."
2. Edward & Renesmee
For being an unchanging immortal, Edward certainly undergoes his own transformation in Breaking Dawn. Despite all the dangers looming, Edward seems remarkably happy . Not only will Bella be with him forever, they have an exceptionally gifted daughter, something he never imagined possible. Because the book is from Bella's point of view, I had a difficult time picking out specific Edward/Renesmee moments. But then: Enter Carter Burwell, who confirmed Rob will play "Renesmee's Lullaby" in the movie--Ultimate Daddy/daughter moment--pass the tissues please!
3. Jacob & Renesmee
Okay, this one's tricky. Here is where I strongly recommend to all the movie-only fans, please read the book before seeing Breaking Dawn 2. Imprinting is a difficult concept and without the backround knowledge of the book, it could be misunderstood. I don't doubt all involved in the movies are being very careful as to how to show Jacob & Renesmee's relationship onscreen. It's interesting to me that when Jacob is first confronted by Bella, he uses the fact that Edward can read his mind; a skill Jacob hated in the past, in his defense of his intentions. "She's just a baby, for crying out loud....You know I don't think of her that way! Do you think Edward would let me live this long if I did? All I want is for her to be safe and happy-is that so bad? So different from what you want?" Ultimately Jacob is Renesmee's protector. "Renesmee reached out to twine her fingers in the fur over his massive shoulder, and her body relaxed a little bit. She was calmer with Jacob close. I felt a tiny bit better, too. As long as Jacob was with Renesmee, she would be all right."
4. Rosalie & Renesmee
Rosalie assists Bella in her fight to keep her baby. And when Renesmee arrives, it is Rosalie who cares for her in Bella's absence. Even after Bella "awakes", she often hands Renesmee off to Rosalie for feedings due to Bella's newborn thirst. Although they have bonded over this child, I often wonder in the unwritten continuation of the story, if after all the danger has passed Rosalie still envys Bella. After all Bella has the very thing Rosalie always wanted and I'm curious if she's satisfied to simply share. Or perhaps Renesmee has charmed them all and that is enough for Rosalie! (Plus to be near Renesmee, Rosalie has to deal with Jacob which, in my opinion, never gets old! LOL)
5. Charlie & Renesmee
Bella: The Sequel. Although Charlie does not want the gory details, there is no way his subconscious can deny Renesmee is Bella's child. "Charlie gasped. I knew what he was seeing. My eyes-his eyes-copied exactly into her perfect face....He was counting backward, trying to fit nine months into one. Trying to put it together but not able to force the evidence right in front of him to make any sense." After the initial shock, Charlie settles nicely into the role of Grampa. "I could see it in his face-I could watch it growing there. Charlie was as helpless against her magic as the rest of us. Two seconds in his arms, and already she owned him."
PS. Somewhere in the movie I hope they reference the fact that when Bella was pregnant and she thought it was a boy, she named the baby Edward Jacob. Cheesy? Maybe--but I loved it!!
So that's what I've come up with on the much anticipated human/vampire child. Let me know what you are most looking forward to in regards to Renesmee.
