I had a dream last night. It was confusing, I was at his house with him and a woman came in. The front of her shirt covered I blood as were her hands. She was screaming in what I think was French.
“Aidez-moi!!! Ils viennent!!! Ils viennent!!!” she screamed over and over.
“Son pas mal, ce crca parfait” he said calmly as his face instantly got worried I didn't know how I was dreaming in French but hey, dreams were weird. He said some other things and she got calm. If you took the blood away she was okay. Long blond hair and deep blue eyes. She was about my height.
“Can you take care of her for a second?” he asked me in a pleading voice.
“Yes, go,” I didn't know how but I just knew that he was going to be okay. He took his shirt and shoes off and ran out the back door. And. . . then I woke up to my alarm going off.
I hated that thing. I got ready for school, shower, clothes, make up, hair. I didn't have to wake my mother up, seeing as she had already left. I ate my breakfast, not even tasting it, I knew that as soon as I was out the door he would be there waiting for me.
He had perfect timing.
“Good morning, beautiful,” he said as I got closer to him. I blushed and he laughed.
“Hey,” and again calmness spread over me as I got closer to him. I forgot everything and the only thing that matter was him. He laughed at my small answer.
“Ready for school?”
“Yeah, right. I would have liked to do the same thing as yesterday, today. But we have to go,” I said wile I got in the now completely familiar truck.
“Trust me, and don't take it wrong but its taking every ounce of my being to take you to school instead of my house, but we have to be responsible,” he chuckled.
I laughed, “Nice,” was all I said.
“So how was your night?” I asked
“Restless, I had a weird dream.”
“What was it about?” he asked truly interested.
“We were in your house watching television and this woman came in screaming in French. You replied and calmed her down, then you told me to take care of her. I agreed and you took your shirt and shoes off and ran out the back door, saying that you would take care of it,” with every word his face more serious with every word I uttered, “Sadly I woke up then. I really wanted to know what was going to happen next, but I had to get ready.”
“You know French?” he asked, his face still portrayed the worry that filled him.
“No, that is what surprised me the most. I barely even knew what you was saying.” I looked out the window. We were half way through Byrne St. and again neither the feeling nor the shadow came up.
“Did you dream anything else?” he asked, I'm sure trying to change the subject.
“No, that was all. Why were you sleepless?” I asked, suddenly worried.
“Just couldn't sleep,” I noticed he was trying to avoid that subject, too. What had he been doing?
“Oh okay?” was all I said. Then we were at the school. He parked by Naomi's car, she was standing by it.
“Hey, how are you?” she asked, now I think she is bipolar. First she treats me like I was an enemy and now we are back to best of friends.
“Um. . . I'm good, how about you?” I asked, worried. I looked to Ezekiel for answers but he was just smiling.
“Oh I'm am just great. Guess who asked me to the dance?”
“I don't know who?” I asked, happy that my friend was back.
“You wont believe it, Justin asked me!!!!” she literally shirked. Other students around us just stared.
“No way!!!!” I said back, going along. I didn't care that I didn't really approve of him, I was just happy she was back.
“So, are you two going to the dance tomorrow?” she asked looking at her cousin.
“Um. . . I don't care, do you want to go, Lizz?” he looked at me.
“Actually, I wanted to spend time alone. I'm not really fond of school dances.” I answered.
“Its settled then, we aren't going. I would like to spend time with you, too,” he said. He bend down and kissed me.
“Ewwww. . . . come on. I don't want to have the image of my best friend and cousin kissing each other for the rest of the day. We will see you later Ezekiel,” she grabbed my arm and hauled me away. I gave him an apologetic smile but he just smiled and shook his head.
We arrived to 1st period and she took her usual seat by me. I just couldn't help but smile. I had my best friend back, and everything was back to normal.
“What made you change your mind?” I asked her after a few minutes of speech form our teacher.
“What do you mean?” she asked.
“Well, for the past few days you have been acting weird and mad at us. What made you change your mind and not care that we went out?”
“Oh. . . I wasn't mad because of that. I had a misunderstanding with Ezekiel. I'm okay now, it was a stupid thing to do and I'm sorry.” she said, and to tell you the truth, I didn't believe her at all. Years of friendship let me learn signs of her lying. She, much like me, wasn't a good lier.
“It's okay, I'm just happy to have my friend back. Are you sitting with us during lunch. Today is B day and I am going to sit with Alexis and them?”
“No, I have to talk to someone. But I will see you after school, okay?” she said, not taking her eyes off the teacher.
§ § § § § § § § § § § §
Third and fourth period we didn't really talk. We had to be responsible and do our work. I knew that I was getting behind and it was only in the classes that we were in together. I am betting that he was getting behind on work, too. The bell that let u out for lunch rang and I left him go to were ever he had to go.
“Hey, why weren't you in school yesterday?” was the first thing they all said, I think that they had synchronized with each other.
“Oh well.” crap, I haven't made a story. Crap, “I had. . . things to do. Sorry.”
“Yeah right, do these things involve that guy we saw you with? Hey, we don't even know his name. What is it?” said Alexis.
“Oh yeah his name is,” all their faces got closer to me with the anticipation of knowing his name, “Ezekiel.”
“Ooo I like it, its mysterious” said Amita. She didn't know how right she was.
“But don't change the subject, did you or did you not spend the day with him?” asked Symone. Damn.
“Yes, I did,” I replied, and under my breath I said, “and the night, too.”
Symone, who was closest to me, gasped. She just stared at me wide eyed. “But nothing happened.” I said mostly to her.
They all gave me scrutinizing looks but excepted my story. The rest of the day went by with no more questions. After the last bell rang, I went outside to find Naomi and Ezekiel laughing. A smile spread over my lips, yes it was all back to normal.
“Hey chica, how was your day?” asked Naomi.
“It was fine, how about you two?” I asked, with my smile got wider.
“Good, are you ready to go?” he answered.
“Sure, what are you doing tonight?” I asked Naomi.
“Tonight, nothing. Why?”
“Well, do you want to spend the night?” I was going to be bored and I hadn't spent time with her in a wile.
“Oh, yeah sure. I'll be there in a wile,” she said as she got in her car. I looked to my side and Ezekiel was just smiling away.
“Nothing, nothing.” he said and kept smiling.
“Weirdo,” I said under my breath.
“I heard that,” he said as he closed the door. I just busted out laughing and he joined me. We crossed Byrne St and, like the other times I was with him, neither the feeling nor the shadow presented them selves. It was the weirdest thing. They both only came up when I was alone or with other people. But when I was with Ezekiel neither showed. It was probably my imagination, or he just made me feel safe.
“Hey, Lizz are you okay?” I must have been thinking very hard because we were parked in front of my house and he was looking at me weirdly.
“I'm fine, sorry. I was day dreaming I guess,” I answered quickly.
“Okay then. Well I have to go tend to some things, ill pick you up tomorrow for school. Okay?”
“Oh, yeah sorry.” he bent over and kissed me. This was the kiss I liked, the soft one that showed me just how much he cared. I got out of the truck, and like most times he waited for me to get in the house and lock the door. Once in he house I called my mom and told her Naomi was staying over. She was fine with it. So I went ahead and cleaned the house a bit.
I heard someone honk as I was putting the pillows on my bed. I ran downstairs and there was Naomi, with enough clothes for a whole year.
“Hey, how ya doing?” she asked as soon as I opened the door.
“Good. I forgot to tell you that we are going to the movies on Saturday and you are invited.” I helped her with her bags.
“We who?” she asked instantly as we went up the stairs to put her things in my closet.
“Oh, Amita, Alexis, Symone, Rosa, and me. Do you want to come?”
“Yeah, sure. What are we watching?”
“Don't know yet,” I looked at the clock on top of my bedside table. It was already 6:30.
“So, what do you want to do?” I asked her when we were in the living room.
“Let's just watch a movie, I am just tired of. . . just tired.”
I could tell she was about to say something that wasn't supposed to be told, and I just had to ask her, “Do you know what is wrong with Ezekiel? I mean he has a secret but he keeps telling me that he cant lose me and that I wouldn't except him if he told me. Do you know what it is?”
“Um. . . no I-I don't know anything,” she said looking the other way. I knew she was lying.
“What is it Naomi, you cant lie to me.”
“Look Lizz, its not for me to tell. It's his business, and when he wants to tell you he will,” she said, and added under her breath, “even though I think he shouldn't expose the pack.”
Again with that word, pack. What did she mean by pack, he had a gang or some thing. Was he from the mafia? I didn't push the subject and just put in a movie. I made some popcorn and go us some soda for the movie. We watched How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, we loved this movie and every time we had a chance we watched it. It just never got old. By 8 we had laughed all we could, I made her the usual bed on the opposite side of the room. My dad had decided to buy her a bed, what with her spending almost every summer with us. When I moved here I brought it with me for the same purpose. But instead of going to bed we went and just watched about 3 hours of Family Guy, wile remembering our parents didn't let us watch it when we were younger and we sneaked and watched them anyway.
We went up to bed. We were already in our pj's, we had changed before the movie so we could be comfortable. Instead of sleeping we talked.
“Naomi, why were you acting so weird this last week?” I asked
“I told you, it was just a misunderstanding between family. You don't have to worry.”
Suddenly I remembered what had happened earlier in the week, “Remember, after lunch earlier this week, why were you acting all submissive to Ezekiel? Oh, and whats up with the pack and mates and things, I didn't get it?”
She was quiet for a bit, “It isn't my place to tell you, I told you when Ezekiel is ready he will tell you.”
“But that is unfair, I am his girlfriend and I think I have a right to know. And since when do you not tell me things? We have been friends for years and I have never kept anything from you.” by now my anger was rising. It wasn't fair, how could every one know this secret, and I, his girlfriend, didn't know.
“I am sorry, trust me the only thing I want to do is tell you but I cant. He gave me an order. . . he made me promise I wouldn't tell you. Lizz, he will tell you, just give him some time okay.” was she about to say he ordered her? Since when did Naomi Nahuel receive orders from anyone?
“Okay, okay. I promise I wont ask anymore and I will wait till he tells me himself. Goodnight.”
She laughed, “Good, sleep tight.”

“Lizz, Lizz, turn it off!!!! Elizabeth TURN IT OFF!!!!!”
I awoke to Naomi screaming for me to turn off my alarm clock.
“God I have hated that damn alarm clock since you bought it,” she said as she put a pillow over her head.
I laughed and got up. I went to wake my mother up but she wasn't there. She must have a big case. So I just went and took a shower and got dressed. I came back to my room and had to wake Naomi. She has never been a morning person. She worked better during the night. After much complaints she got up and noticed she was going to be late she hurried to take a shower and get ready. I did my hair and make up and went downstairs to eat my breakfast. My cell vibrating, telling me I had a text, it was Ezekiel it said, “Kant pick you up 2day, and I'm not going to school, I will see you tomorrow, sorry, love you.”
I felt bad but it was good too, we would ride in my car or hers. But he wouldn't be in school today, which was bad. I ate my breakfast and Naomi came down the stairs in a run.
“Do we have time?”
I looked at my watch, “Yes, we do.”
She got some breakfast, I have never seen anybody eat so fast.
“Okay, lets go,” she said as I washed the bowls.
“Do you want to go in my car or yours?” I asked.
“Isn't Ezekiel picking us up?”
“No he just texted me and told me he wasn't going to go to school today, he didn't say why.” suddenly her face changed, now it wasn't happy, go lucky Naomi, it was worried and scared Naomi.
“What day is it?” she asked her voice quivering.
“Its Friday the 17th. Why?” I asked worried now. Her face crumpled. Like she had just remembered something bad. “Naomi, whats wrong?”
“Take your car, I am cant go to school either. Ill go home, I will see you tomorrow.” she went out the door before I could ask her what was wrong. I looked out the window and she jumped in her car, I would have to take her bag to her. She left so fast she forgot her things. What was wrong with the Nahuel family???
Mad as I don't know what I got in my car and drove to school. Oddly, I welcomed the feeling of being watched and the shadow of a running . . what ever it was. I didn't feel scared nor creped out, I didn't even mind it. I actually felt protected. Wow, I was feeling protected from a strange feeling and a shadow that I thing I imagine when I'm alone. I needed help.
I got to school with only minutes to spare, which were spent trying to find a place to park in an over crowded parking lot. I entered the class right when the bell rang. Class started and I paid attention, I actually paid attention to all my classes. Lunch finally came and today I sat with my friends.
“Hey, chics,” said Amita as she approached the now almost full table. Everyone said hey and instantly started talking.
“So, are you all still up for tomorrow?” asked Alexis, drawing the attention of the rest of the group.
“Yup, we are,” said Amita, answering for the rest of us, “well, we are, are you coming Lizz?” she asked me.
“Yeah, ill come. Oh and Naomi is coming, too. If that is okay?”
“Yeah, of coarse it is. We have missed her, she has been acting weird all week.” said Rosa. So she hadn't been acting weird towards me only. I hate mysteries when I cant solve them.
“So, we are up for tomorrow, what do you all want to watch?” asked Symone.
“Lets watch Sherlock Holmes or The Lovely Bones, what do you all think?” said Amita.
“Yeah, I want to watch The Lovely Bones, I read the book and I liked it,” said Symone. Of coarse she read it, she reads everything.
The rest of us agreed on watching The Lovely Bones, after all many people were saying that it was a good movie and an exceptional book. The bell rang and sent us hurrying to our 5th period.
The seat beside me was empty, and haunted me with its users absence. As was the seat in 6th. What I knew of him was that he wasn't human, I also knew that he healed extremely fast. The other day when I spent the night with him, he had cuts that might have still been bleeding, and by night fall he had scars. A normal person would take weeks for those cuts to look like his. And Naomi was in on what ever he was. First, she had the same cuts only not as bad as him, but they would have left scars on her face. She had healed just as fast as him, if not faster. Also, they seemed to be absent from school at the same time, always together. What did this mean? I think they are the same thing, they are. . . what ever they are and they are together. Are there more of them? There is more, I mean, Naomi kept repeating 'you cant do this to the pack', that is what she meant. There are more of them, what ever they were there were many. Was my boyfriend the leader of this so called 'pack'? She also called him alpha. The only time I have heard of alphas was with wolves. Alphas were the leaders. The rest of the group had to be submissive, and that was exactly how Naomi acted around him. She did put her head down when he told her something in a harsh voice. So they were. . . .
“Elizabeth, are you okay?”
I looked up and it was my teacher, “Yeah, I'm sorry Mr. Thomas. I guess I just zoned out for a minute.” Just then the bell rang releasing us from school. Were had the last two periods gone? The morning classes had passed slowly, like torture. And the last two had passed in a rush. Thinking about what he might be and what he isn't, were he is and were he isn't, with me.
I got in my car and left, not wanting to face being caught in a loud parking lot full of teenagers. Even though I was alone, the figure didn't show itself, neither did the feeling of being watched. I hurried home and called my mother. Told her I was home and that I was not feeling well. She said she was staying late at work, that I could order a pizza. I wasn't hungry, instead I went up to my room and began reading Blood Promise.
§ § § § § § § § § § § §
I must have fallen asleep reading because I woke up with the feeling that something was happening to him, and it was something wrong. I looked at the clock and it read 3 am. Something was wrong. I had had the same feeling before and I had made the mistake of not paying attention to it. I went to see him later on and he was hurt. Badly hurt. The only difference was that now, the feeling was about 3 times as worse. I even thought that the pain in my stomach would stop me from moving. I got up and put some shoes on, not even stopping to change my pj's.
I ran outside, not getting my car keys. The night surrounded me like a blanket. I looked up and was faced with a full moon surrounded by many stars. The beauty of it surprised me, from the time that I moved here I had never seen something so beautiful. The full moon was straight above me. A wave of nausea hit me and I remembered what I was doing. I kept running, I didn't know why I didn't just take the car but my subconscious said I needed to get to him. I had to be there for him. I don't know how but I knew that time was running out for him.
I reached Byrne St. and the nausea got worse. I didn't get the feeling of being watched nor did I see that all ways present shadow. I ran up the twisted street that ended on his front lawn. I ran to the door, not caring if he got mad, and I barged in to his house. It was dark and quiet, too quiet. I ran straight to his room, but he wasn't there. The bed was like it was the day before. Like he hadn't slept in it.
I looked all around, all the lights were off. Every single part of the first floor was as if nobody lived in it. Like it was just there, clean and just there. Like nobody used it. I looked every wear, even under his four poster bed. The house was spotless.
The attic. I didn't know how I knew but I had to get to the attic. I opened every door on the second floor. I opened the last door on the left and there it was. Stairs leading up the the attic. I practically fell every second step.
As I got closer to the top, a sound came to my ears. Horrible noises, like an animal in pain, but also I heard a human screaming. I stopped, frozen. Something horrible was up there, I couldn't go up, I was scared. But he was there, too. My boyfriend was there and he was in trouble, I had to help him.
Forgetting my fears, I ran up the last steps to confront what ever had made the horrible noises. I froze as soon as I saw it. I was paralyzed, now looking at a half beast half human creature.
