Chris Weitz Runs to the Rescue of fan accused of Piracy!!!

Another reason to LOVE Chris Weitz besides making a good Twilight film, he cares for the the fans....

A fan got arrested last week and held in a cell for 2 days for allegedly trying to videotape 'New Moon'. She contends that she was only videotaping a party that was being held at the movie theater for her sister. A surprise party being held and that she was not trying to videotape the movie to distribute the film.

The fan is clearly talking and videotaping birthday songs and things to remember the event with narration. Not holding still and capturing the movie. The fan, 22-year-old Tumpach, if convicted could be facing 3 years in jail. I think they are trying to make an example of this fan and Chris Weitz agrees.

Needless to say, the case seems to me terribly unfair and I would like to do what I can to address this,” Weitz wrote in an e-mail.

Weitz questioned whether her arrest was justified.

There is, needless to say, a difference between trying to protect the copyright of a film and making an unfair example of someone who clearly seems not to have any intentions towards video piracy,” Weitz wrote.

He said he had contacted the studio that released the film, Summit Entertainment, to express his concern about her arrest, but he acknowledged there’s probably little he can do to influence the outcome of her case.

I am not sure what effect I would have on the case,” he wrote, noting “the film is, after all, not my property.”

For the fan's sake I hope Chris Weitz's plee to the studio helps. I will let you know if I hear anything else about this. But let's keep our fingers crossed that a fan JUST like us gets set free.

GO CHRIS WEITZ!! I think as fans of twilight as well we should try our best and do something to help this girl. I know its pretty much common sense to never bring a camera to the theatre and record even if its for a few minutes, but its still unfair! Can't we start a petition?

This is rediculous, there are murderers that get set free and they are trying to put someone away for recording a birthday party!

Now that I understand that it is the theater that is pressing charges I must say that I understand why they are doing it.

I used to be involved in the logo business. People would come in and ask me to put Disney, Warner Brothers, sports teams and NASCAR logos on their garments all the time. Then they would bet all upset when I tried to explain that IT’S ILLEGAL for me to do something like that. They say they would never tell anyone, yadda, yadda, yadda! Problem is there are people working for these companies that do nothing but go around to companies like I used to own and see if they would do it. Can you say BUSTED! The reason I would not do it is because those companies would wind up owning everything I had – including my house, cars, bank accounts – everything because they could file a lawsuit against me for copyright infringement!

I am sure the theater stands to loose their franchise license, among many other things, if they had not taken the steps they did. It is probably in their contract with the movie powers that be to do something like this. They have no other options if they want to stay in business!

She broke the damn rules people. Yes, 3 years in the pokey is harsh. She’s already paid dearly for her stupidity and let’s hope she learned that, no matter what the occasion is, you do not use a camera inside a theater ONCE THE MOVIE HAS STARTED!

There are reasons for rules. If we all followed them more often then we wouldn’t have problems like this!
