Chris Weitz Runs to the Rescue of fan accused of Piracy!!!

Another reason to LOVE Chris Weitz besides making a good Twilight film, he cares for the the fans....

A fan got arrested last week and held in a cell for 2 days for allegedly trying to videotape 'New Moon'. She contends that she was only videotaping a party that was being held at the movie theater for her sister. A surprise party being held and that she was not trying to videotape the movie to distribute the film.

The fan is clearly talking and videotaping birthday songs and things to remember the event with narration. Not holding still and capturing the movie. The fan, 22-year-old Tumpach, if convicted could be facing 3 years in jail. I think they are trying to make an example of this fan and Chris Weitz agrees.

Needless to say, the case seems to me terribly unfair and I would like to do what I can to address this,” Weitz wrote in an e-mail.

Weitz questioned whether her arrest was justified.

There is, needless to say, a difference between trying to protect the copyright of a film and making an unfair example of someone who clearly seems not to have any intentions towards video piracy,” Weitz wrote.

He said he had contacted the studio that released the film, Summit Entertainment, to express his concern about her arrest, but he acknowledged there’s probably little he can do to influence the outcome of her case.

I am not sure what effect I would have on the case,” he wrote, noting “the film is, after all, not my property.”

For the fan's sake I hope Chris Weitz's plee to the studio helps. I will let you know if I hear anything else about this. But let's keep our fingers crossed that a fan JUST like us gets set free.

the only thing i take into a cinema is my phone (which can take photos and video) but it i switched OFF i only have it for emergencies when i leave.
If the reports are true and she was talking over the videos anyway birthday or not as a member of the audience that would have pissed me off enough to get her removed anyway, we nearly had a group of people removed from our showing due to the constant giggling and shouting out when it wasnt called for eg not when shirts were ripped off lol and so be it they should respect others in the theatre who have paid to see the film not listen to them. im glad that chris has tried to "save" her i dont agree with prison for this i think by now she may have suffered enough

This is ridiculous and has gone too far. A slap on the wrist would have been fine. However 2 days in jail and possibly three years is just plain stupid. She was not sitting there pointing the camera at the screen and staying quite so she could put it on YouTube. She was talking and excited for the birthday party. People need to take a step back and realize that this is not the best person to use as an example. All it will do is anger people and cause bad feelings. She has suffered enough for being at a birthday party and being excited. All charges should be dropped. I think she has already learned her lesson, and tax dollars to hold a trial and incarcerate her would just be a waste.

Perhaps I'm being too harsh but doesn't everyone else think she's just plain idiotic to take a camera into a cinema and not expect to be accused? Fair enough, she probably was just filming her friends/sister, but that doesn't make her any less stupid.

Petitions don't really work in the legal system... There is no mens rea (criminal intent) then the charges should be dropped.

Is there anyone stepping up for her as a witness in this case to say that she WAS only trying to videotape the birthday party? Three years in jail? It's ludacris! They're making a big deal out of nothing! If there's nothing of evidence to indicate that she did in fact try to copy the movie then why are they keeping her in jail? It's absolutely asinine!

FYI to Bella Marie Swan- I do not believe she is being kept in jail. From what I undestand she was bailed out. However they are still trying to take her to trial so they can lock her up for three years is what the report saids.

They really need to let her go. There are killings and rapists out there that aren't in prison...and they have to hold this girl for a video-taping? 4 minutes? Come on...get serious people!!
