Hello...
Okay, well to break the amazing sheet of glass of mystery, no I don't like Twilight. Yeah, I'm a "troll", but a sense-able troll that Wants to understand how is Twilight so amazing & actually "Vampire Fiction".
But I don't necessarily mind the existence of Twilight, with it here the only direction most vampire fiction can go is Up.
I myself am taking the plunge of writing a story of vampire fiction, but no human/vampire love sorry.
There, I said it, I am here to be "the skeptic" on here, & no one knows something better than their FANS.
I've read the original Dracula, & have read a few Ann Rice books, read Twilight (back when it was "Just a semi-popular book" mind you) & thought it was dumb.

Well Twilight is a love story. Very Romeo and Juliet, not necessarily vampires. The love story and the storytelling is what draws you in.
As for the historical vampire rules....who said everyone when writing a vampire book has to make the vampires the same. SM stepped out of the box and made her own rules, which made it different and exciting. i am old school vampire genre lover but sucked in by the differences and it lit a fire in me to read more because of the new....in essence she is not trendy with her vampires, but when it all comes down to it the love story is what we all love.
Hope that helps. And for the record book one didn't wow me but after book 2, I said that's my fav. After book 3 I said that's my fav. After book 4, I said that's my fav. And after the partial book online book 5, I said omg that is my favorite. They get better and better.

I get Vampires are fictional & can be do whatever but when you turn it upside down into Sexy super-people that "sparkle", it gets a bit ridiculous in my opinion, but thanks.
