Since there was recently a post about the ultra limited edition "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" Japanese box set, I thought I'd also post about the other Japanese box sets that came out for "Twilight" and "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" .

From the research I have conducted online at various Japanese retailer sites, there seems to have only been one special box set for the release of "Twilight" on DVD.  It was a limited edition of 10,000 sets.  It came in a keepsake box featuring Bella and Edward dancing at the Prom on the lid; it was accented with hand-glued Swarovski crystals. The box set included an 80 page photo album, a 2-disc DVD set with a special cover featuring Bella and Edward right before their first kiss, film cells and a 36 page special "The World of Twilight" booklet.  The extra content on the 2-disc DVD set included: audio commentary with Catherine Hardwicke, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart; 15 minutes of unused footage; a 50-minute "Making of" documentary; an 8-minute Comic Con documentary; an 11-minute slide show of promotional photos; a 23-minute interview with Stephenie Meyer; a 6-minute documentary about the movie's music; a 7-minute clip with Robert Pattinson; a 5-minute clip with Kristen Stewart; a 4-minute "Bella's Lullaby" remix video; a 5-minute clip of Robert Pattinson playing the piano and clips of Bella being bitten; music video clips of "Decode" by Paramore, "Leave Out All the Rest" by Linkin Park and "Super Massive Black H***" by Muse; and exclusive footage of the cast's visit to Japan.  THIS SET IS SOLD OUT.

For the New Moon DVD release, there were two special box sets available.  There was the "Premium" edition limited to 10,000 set and the "Always" edition limited to 3,000 sets.

"Premium" Edition:

"Always" Edition:

The "Premium" edition and the "Always" edition both came in a keepsake box and included a 3-disc DVD set in a special case featuring Edward and Bella laying in the meadow, a photo card set, a photo sleeve, a  promotion/production notes booklet and film cells.  In addition, the "Always" edition also included a special microSD card loaded with a copy of "Twilight" so you could watch the movie on your cell phone.  The extra content on the 3-disc DVD set included: audio commentary by Chris Weitz and Peter Lambert; a 2-minute slide show of  "Eclipse" scenery; the theatrical trailer; a 65-minute "Making of" documentary; 13-minutes of music video clips; a 9-minute clip "About the Wolves"; a 7-minute clip "Team Edward vs. Team Jacob"; a 5-minute clip with Taylor Lautner; a 7-minute "Behind the Scenes" clip about the location shoot in Italy; a 31-minute collection of Edward's scenes; a 33-minute collection of Jacob's scenes; a 19 minute collection of unused footage; an additional 31 minute collection of unused footage; an 8-minute clip "About the Volturi"; a 13-minute clip about the Twilight fans; a 10-minute "Making of" clip about the movie's music; a 14-minute story board gallery slide show; and, 6 minutes of footage of the cast's visit to Japan.  These sets are sold out at Amazon Japan.  If you are web-savvy and able to read Japanese, you may be able to find these box sets at other retailers, in-store and online.  Please be aware that many Japanese retailers will not ship outside of Japan.

I have a friend in Tokyo on the hunt for a remaining copy of the Twilight box set.  Keep your fingers crossed that she finds one.  I found one last copy of the "Always" edition of "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" box set after 4-5 failed attempts at online retailers who didn't want to send it out international mail.  I'll let you know when it gets here.

Why can't WE get stuff like this here in the good, old U.S. of A???

That is because the DVD distributor in Japan is different from the DVD distributor in the US.  Much of the actual contents on the DVDs is fairly similar, with the exception of any additional footage taken during Twilight-related events hosted in Japan.  I suspect the US distributor doesn't feel that the US consumer would be willing to shell out the additional cost for all of the pretty extras.  The "Always" edition of "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" I posted above retails for 8000 yen, approximately $100 (since the exchange rate sucks right now).  However, this seems to be changing, as evidenced by the recent inclusion of photo cards with the Target special edition Blu-Ray set.

Thank goodness I'm bilingual.  I've been doing more research on the Japanese Twilighter's site and it seems that the "Twilight" special Japanese box set was originally only limited to 5000 sets.  When this box set sold out before it was released to stores, the distribution company raised the number to 10,000 box sets instead.  Keep your fingers crossed that I can get my hands on one of these!

Also I've found that in Japan, just like in the US, different retailers offered different goodies to fans who pre-ordered from their respective outlets.  Although the actual contents of the DVD was the same (unlike in the US for the "Twilight" and "New Moon" DVDs, which had different contents depending on where you ordered from), Japanese retailers coupled such items as Twilight postcards, posters, desktop backgrounds, file folders, etc.  Each retailer had a different goody.  Japanese New Moon DVD pre-order goodies
