Something my twelve-year-old sister brought to my attention, was that Bella rarely smiles in the movie. In the book she's always smiling. In the movie, the only times that come to mind are when Billy gives her the truck and when Edward says the infamous "you'd better hang on tight, spidermonkey".

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

Yeah. Kristen made Bella a little more serious than she was supposed to be, just like Rob made Edward just a little more depressed. It's interesting how they interpreted the characters, though.

Definitely. I've noticed that tendency in Kristen in other movies, though. I guess her acting habits just happen to omit smiles.
That's not to say that I didn't think they both did a fantastic job in the movie. I did. It's just an interesting observation, I guess.

Yes, she seemed much more serious in the movie than the book. In the book she comes across as kind and friendly in a shy sort of way. In the movie she seems a bit standoffish.

I agree completely. I will say, though, that it worked for me (mostly). I think Kristen Stewart is very talented and bright.

yeah, i never really thought about how much bella smiled, but that's true, she was a lot more smiley and friendly. but kristen is more awkward i think and always seems a bit uncomfortable,so she made bella that way. i dont think. I think Amber Pederson is kinda right too (another thing I didn't notice until it was pointed out) Rob did make Edward more depressed. I think he was more depressed in the inside then he led people to believe, in the book. He was always smiling and happy around Bella but Rob didn't show that as much.

Honestly, in the movie, there wasn't much on-screen time between Bella and Edward that wasn't a serious plot-driving scene. I think that's part of the reason we didn't see that kind of thing. Also, I remember reading or hearing somewhere in an interview that Stephenie Meyer and Rob actually disagreed as to how self-loathing and tormented Edward was. She thought less, he thought more, which is probably why he seems more depressed.

Woah, well, to be honest, I didn't notice it while watching the movie, but now that you mention it, Kristen doesn't seem to smile very much at all. I think that's just how she interpreted Bella, and acted through. Even so, I really liked her.

My interpretation of Bella in the book was that she was very serious and grown up. I didn't really imagine her very smiley. Also, I think Rob nailed the depressed, self-loathing of Edward. In MS when he's falling in love with Bella, he thinks of himself as undeserving of her love, he can't imagine why she would ever choose him. Seems like there was another part where the family commented that Edward was actually tolerable again since Bella had come into his life.

you can't dispute that she is smiley when she herself frequently says "I smiled" or "this made me smile".

Both Rob and Kristen have said that the Director and Producers kept telling them to smile more during shooting.
