Oscar Watch on Kristen Stewart, Melissa Leo

Welcome to the Rileys features three really great performances, so says the buzz coming out of Sundance. Kristen Stewart is supposed to be particularly good as the 16 year-old stripper.

This MTV review says Stewart is “utterly fearless in “Welcome to the Rileys.” That’s the takeaway from the film’s world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday afternoon. You can quibble all you want with her portrayal of a 16-year-old runaway turned stripper and prostitute. But you cannot walk away from a viewing and say the actress doesn’t fearlessly expose herself physically and emotionally, and doesn’t do so with astonishing maturity and believability.”

And Melissa Leo is, “nothing short of spectacular. With one expression—a shifting of the eyes, a downturn of the lips—the actress can communicate exactly what Lois is feeling, and what’s more, she can make the audience empathize with her. Leo’s lines are alternately funny and heartbreaking, and you root for her as such overcomes incapacitating anxiety to join Doug in New Orleans and find in Allison the daughter they once lost. It becomes clear they’re all damaged, and they all need each other.”

Best Actress is a tight category already this year — which is great, since usually it’s not. Will Leo be lead? If Stewart is supporting it seems all but certain she will be nominated for this. But she’ll have more trouble if she goes for lead. If the reviews aren’t great, though, it will be more difficult obviously.

I'm really expecting that. She deserves it completely. She's an incredible actress. I really hope she gets nominated, that would be fantastic.

"...with one expression, a shifting of the eyes, a downturn of the lips, the actress can communicate exactly what Lois is feeling, and what's more she can make the audience emphathize with her." While this is attributed to Melissa Leo (and I'm sure deservedly so) I have said the same thing about KStew, especially for Twilight and New Moon (Eclipse, not so much, but she didn't have great dialogue to work with). There are numerous scenes in Twilight where I felt that KStew just had to lift her eyebrows and she said it all (when she enters the Biology class for the first time and she standing by the fan and she sees Edward's glaring at her). That's why I get so pissed off when ppl say she's "emotionless". IMHO It would be so great for her to get the Best Supporting Actress nomination for this role. Then she could really give the finger to those who criticize her acting ability.

@Eden Courtney I totally agree with you, but she is young enough -she's only 20. So she has a plenty of time to proof her talent to those people. She has to continues her hard work and 1 day she will take the Oscar. She must not GIVE UP because of those people -that's all.

@ivy - I think that's another thing that ppl don't take into consideration - she's just 20 now so she was only 17 on the set of Twilight! And, I still say that KStew carries these movies more than anyonelse. If I had the time, I would go through them all and count how many scenes Rob is, how many Taylor is in, and how many scenes Kristen is in. She's in nearly every scene!! Think about that! Yes, depending on which "team" we're on, we wait with bated breath for either Edward or Jacob to appear, but Bella is in almost every scene, cuz it's from her point of view! Anyway, I'm hoping she at least gets the nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Welcome to the Rileys.
