Robert Pattinson interview 2008 about the audition for Twilight
"When I got into bed with Kristen, I said, ‘I’ve only known you for an hour and we are in bed.’ I think I must have gone way over the top with it as well, because I remember looking up afterwards and director Catherine Hardwicke had a look on her face as if to say, ‘What are you doing? You look like you’re having a seizure.’ I felt something with Kristen during that scene, which very rarely happens between two actors. I went out of the room really wanting the part and I sent an email to Catherine about it. I then read all the books in a weekend.

Rob has said many times he read the first three books before shooting Twilight. Initially, the actors signed on to star in a trilogy (Breaking Dawn was not published until after the first Twilight film was finished). I would imagine he would read them before agreeing to star in them. Obviously BD is an exception because their lives blew up after Twilight premiered and it was sort of a given that they would sign on for the last movie, whether he read it yet or not.

He didn't read BD til right before filming, he said in previous interviews. He was waiting for WFE to finish shooting then he was going to read BD.

Just because he wasn't familiar with the Leg Hitch doesn't mean he didn't read the books. I've read each book 3 times (except New Moon, I've only read once). and I have absorbed a little more with each read. Besides, he's a guy. What women may zero in on immediately in a story may go over a guy's head.
