It only takes a few seconds and allows your layout to work! then go back to the layout and select again this time it will go on your profile you might have to refresh your page ..
After you select your layout you will see it on your profile as well as other peoples profiles unless they have chosen a layout. Then you will see the layout they chose on their page.
