It looks like another one of Stephenie Meyer's best-selling books may be coming to the big screen.
Variety reports that producers have acquired the movie rights to her adult novel, The Host. The book is Meyer's take on an "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" type of alien future. In the book, the hero's body is taken over by an alien host -- but she refuses to give up, leaving two souls trapped in one body and leading to an ... er, interesting ... love triangle/quadrangle. Because the original owner of this body -- Melanie -- refuses to give up her search for her true love, Jared. But does host Wanderer share her love ... or has she found someone else?
The Host is a pretty good read -- and it's not surprising that someone has snatched up the movie rights, considering the blockbuster frenzy around Summit Entertainment's "Twilight Saga" movies based on Meyer's Twilight Saga of books. (Movie #2, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" is due out November 20th, and movie #3, "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," is currently in production in Vancouver, B.C.)
The Host also has potentially wider appeal than Meyer's Twilight Saga -- with plenty of opportunity for fight scenes and cool special effects, given the alien/sci-fi nature of the book.
According to Variety, producers Nick Wechsler, Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz have bought the movie rights for The Host -- with Andrew Niccol slated to write the script and direct.
Wechsler and the Schwartzes already have a futuristic book-adaptation under their belt -- their adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's The Road comes to theaters November 25th. According to Variety, they are also producing "The Dying of the Light," an adaptation of Pete Takada's An Eye at the Top of the World. It also sounds like they want to work with Meyer on a faithful adaptation of The Host.
Wechsler tells Variety, "We wanted Stephanie to be involved in the adaptation and have her endorse and be part of the creative decisions [...] she knows more about what works than most."
Here is the official description of The Host from Meyer's website:
Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away.
Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact and continue their lives apparently unchanged. Most of humanity has succumbed.
When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.
Wanderer probes Melanie's thoughts, hoping to discover the whereabouts of the remaining human resistance. Instead, Melanie fills Wanderer's mind with visions of the man Melanie loves—Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she has been tasked with exposing. When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.
