True or False? Angelina Jolie Approached to Direct 'Fifty Shades of Grey'

Fifty Shades Of Grey

From TheHollywoodReporter

A fun rumor went around Hollywood this past weekend: Angelina Jolie, people were saying, had been approached to direct the movie version of the steamy romance novel Fifty Shades of Grey.

THR checked out the chatter last weekend and sources said there may have been an informal conversation but that nothing was real, and reps for the actress-turned-filmmaker say there haven't been any talks with studio Focus Features (Focus also denied the rumor). Still, bloggers are now starting to catch wind of the rumor and of course, in Hollywood, there's always the possibility that Jolie will come aboard.

It would make some sense. Jolie, who made her directorial debut in 2011 with the well-reviewed war drama In the Land of Blood and Honey, and Focus is likely looking for a strong female voice to pair with the material. Regardless, Focus and sister company Universal Pictures are still trying to find the right filmmaker to pair with the racy, somewhat controversial book by EL James. Those efforts are ongoing.

Shades has become a publishing phenomenon, recently hitting10 million in sales. Universal and Focus paid $5 million for movie rights in a bidding war earlier this year.

At the same time, casting rumors have circulated online, with everyone from Amanda Seyfried to Kristen Stewart being floated as possible actresses to play Anastasia Steele, the young woman who becomes involved in an explicit relationship with billionaire businessman Christian Grey.

‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Heating Up With Angelina Jolie Talk

You know that the gazillion-selling steamy novel trilogy Fifty Shades Of Grey has reached outlandish proportions when The New York Post devotes today’s front cover to the idea that women are stocking up on ropes to be used for bondage purposes. All of this has apparently been spurred on by the kinky relationship between the couple in the book trilogy. Things are heating up on the movie front as well for Universal Pictures, which won a seven-figure auction to turn the three books into movies. I’ve heard rumors about the possibility of Angelilna Jolie having a conversation or two about directing it. This has been buzzing around for a couple of weeks. The studio says that no discussions have been had, but they note that if she was interested, that the studio would be also. They loved her directorial debut, In The Land Of Blood And Honey. As for Jolie, I’m told she’s completely focused on her next film,Maleficent, at Disney and isn’t entertaining other offers at this moment.

Things should begin taking shape on Fifty Shades Of Grey shortly. Author E.L. James and her agent, Valerie Hoskins, will be coming in from the UK to Hollywood shortly. They will then set a producer first, followed by setting a writer and filmmaker.

There is no way Rob is going to play Fifty. He has too many projects already lined up.  Really sad because he would be perfect and MOTU was written as Rob.

I don't know if I want Rob in this movie because of the ties to Twilight. It's not that I don't think he can do it. But I think it would be better for his career if he found other projects. If he were to star in this movie, the press would have a field day comparing it to Edward. As fans, we love that. But for Rob, Edward was just one of the many wonderful characters we will see him bring to life in his long career.  I look forward to each of them!

Oh... and as for Angelina directing this?  I really like her, but it appears to me after reading about the first movie that she directed, that she may want projects that are more political in nature. And while you can make an argument that this is political - strong woman, dominant male, etc. - I don't know if she can do it justice. I think I'd rather see a director more in touch with bringing out the relationship and romance angles of the piece.  Just my thoughts....
